BETTER PENCIL
We were going on a date in Osaka.
He said he wanted to buy a new pencil for his work.
We were looking around in the bookstore.
He found one nice-looking pencil.
“Oh, it is a bit expensive, but it looks good”, he said.
“Yeah, I think so”, I agreed.
He was thinking for a bit while, and he decided to buy that pencil.
It was about 10 bucks.
Then he finished shopping and we were about to get out of the bookstore.
“Omg, that pencil looks good”, he murmured.
He check that pencil out, and it is 5 bucks cheaper than the one he bought.
“Oh, no I should’ve bought this one, not that one” he was a bit shocked.
I understand how he felt because those pencil looked almost the same, but the price of the one he bought was 5 bucks more.
Surely I can stand his regret if he said that only once or maybe twice.
HOWEVER…
He kept saying that he should’ve bought that cheaper pencil like more than 5 times.
Am I wrong to get sick of that?
He’s the one who decided to buy the better pencil, he admitted how good the pencil looked.
Does the normal guy keep complaining what he bought? Is it normal?
Maybe yes, but at least not while he is on a date.
In front of his girlfriend, he kept saying that until I got sick of it and told him to stop complaining.
I think I’d already been disappointed at him at that time.
This happened 3 months before we broke up though…. LOL
to be continued..
★今日の英語ワンポイント★
He said he wanted to buy a new pencil for his work.
彼は新しいシャーペンが仕事用に欲しいと言った。
この表現方法は、””を使わずに表現しています(間接話法)。
じゃあこれを、直接話法にするとどうなるでしょうか?
He said,”I want to buy a new pencil formy work”.
“”の中は言った当時の時制でいいのです。だから元に戻します。
では、間接話法を見たところで逆をして見ましょう。ポイントは時制です。
“Omg, that pencil looks good”, he murmured.
He murmured that the pencil lookedgood.
言ったのは過去(murmured)なので、言った内容も過去に直します。
間接話法の疑問文は次のブログで説明します♪
